Teeth Whitening Q & A

Why have my teeth lost their color?

There are a few different reasons why your teeth might lose their whiteness. Discoloration is a natural effect of aging, for example. As you get older, the hard outer layer of your teeth (enamel) gradually wears down, exposing more of the soft inner layer within (dentin). Your dentin slowly turns yellow as you age, and when your enamel thins, that yellow color shows through easier.

Your smile can also lose its color due to poor maintenance. Bad oral hygiene and subpar at-home care can allow stains to develop and settle in, which can affect the color of your teeth.

Staining happens as a result of consuming darkly pigmented foods and beverages, like coffee, red wine, tomato-based sauces, and berries. Smoking cigarettes and consuming chewing tobacco also stains your teeth.

Lastly, medications can affect the luster of your smile, too. Certain antibiotics and antihistamines are known to cause stains, as does exposure to tetracycline antibiotics before the age of eight.

What can you do to whiten my smile?

Dr. Sobieraj offers Ultradent’s Opalescence® for his patients at Beautiful Dentistry, which uses carbamide peroxide to whiten your teeth. The carbamide peroxide breaks down into hydrogen peroxide, which penetrates your enamel and breaks up the pigmentation that causes staining, allowing the beautiful, natural whites of your teeth to shine through.

Beautiful Dentistry offers two different methods for whitening your smile:

In-office whitening

In-office whitening is the quickest way to whiten your smile. Dr. Sobieraj protects your gums, lips, and cheeks, then carefully applies the bleaching gel to your teeth. Your teeth whiten in less than an hour while you wait in the chair, giving you immediate results as soon as you leave the office.

At-home whitening

Take-home whitening takes longer than in-office whitening to achieve the same results, but it enables you to whiten your smile from the comfort of your home.

Dr. Sobieraj gives you custom-designed whitening trays that he makes from an impression of your teeth, so they fit snugly in your mouth. You fill your bleaching tray with a whitening solution and wear it on your teeth for a set amount of time every day, giving you a noticeably whiter smile within a matter of weeks.

Can’t I whiten my smile with a store-bought kit?

You should never whiten your teeth with an over-the-counter kit. The generic strips and trays in those kits aren’t being applied by a professional, and they’re not designed specifically for your mouth, so the bleaching solution frequently leaks out and comes into contact with your gums, where it acts as an irritant.

When the whitening gel does manage to stay in contact with your teeth, it’s not nearly as strong as what you get with professional treatment, so your results won’t be nearly as dramatic.

For a truly radiant smile, you need professional treatment. Call the office today or use the online tool to schedule a teeth whitening visit with Dr. Sobieraj and Beautiful Dentistry.
